Emily Moyer is the Director and Co- Owner of Newport Community Yoga. She moved to Newport in 2015 to attend the graduate program in Holistic Counseling at Salve Regina. A few months after moving to Newport the opportunity to open a yoga studio presented itself. Emily was living with Jess Filkns, co-owner and instructor at NCY, at the time. Together, along with the help of board members Julia Collins, Meagan Zarba, and Madeline Box, they opened Newport Community Yoga non-profit in Feb 2016.

Emily is originally from Massachusetts and began her yoga journey while attending Warren Wilson College in Ashveille, NC where she had access to free yoga classes. Emily earned her 230 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification with Asheville Yoga Center in 2009. Emily has been sharing the gift of Yoga for over nine years with people from many walks of life, teaching in schools, nursing homes, teen lock down facilities, and yoga studios. Emily is most passionate about making the practice of yoga and mindfulness accessible to ALL.

Trainings: After college Emily lived in Vail CO where she continued to teach yoga and earn additional trainings in adaptive yoga and kids yoga from Samhadi Yoga Center in Denver. She also became certified in pilates barre from Definitive Barre Fitness in Denver. She went on to begin her 500 hour in 2013 also with Asheville Yoga Center. In summer of 2016, after opening NCY, Emily trained with Shri Urban Revitalization Yoga non profit located in Pawtucket and NCY became a proud partner studio of Shri offering classes at schools and community centers. Emily and her fiancé Rob have a beautiful one year old son Rowan and love living by the ocean. She is honored to share her greatest passion with this little corner of the earth.

JESSICA FILKINS

Jessica Filkins is a yoga teacher, health coach, reiki master, surfer and founder of Jahmu PBC; originally from Block Island, RI.

She began practicing yoga while attending Colorado College. Jessica found yoga to be very helpful in rehabilitating her knee after the second time she tore her ACL snowboarding.

Through her continued practice of yoga, meditation and introduction to Buddhism she realized that the benefits of yoga not only affected her physical body but also changed her thoughts and her relationship to her mind.

For many years Jessica suffered from severe digestive issues for which doctors could not provide answers. She turned to Alternative Medicine for help and began a spiritual path of healing and self-inquiry. In 2012 she completed her 200hr Vinyasa yoga teacher training in Indonesia.

Jessica has been teaching paddle board yoga, vinyasa yoga, chakra yoga, and private yoga therapy for the past 6 years on Block Island, in the Bahamas, and in Newport.

JULIA COLLINS

Board Member & Instructor

No matter where she found herself in the world, Julia has always sought solace in her breath. A Rhode Island native and a believer in compassion and continual transformation, she was trained in traditional Hatha yoga by Randall O’Leary in Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua.

O’Leary comes from a background of Viniyoga and the B.K.S. Iyengar tradition, having studied under Gary Kraftsow and many others.

Julia completed her B.S in Biology from St. Lawrence University in 2010. She is a practitioner of two healing modalities, Polarity Therapy and Cranio- Sacral Therapy, both of which she continues to study in Tepoztlàn, Mexico.

On and off the mat, Julia seeks to guide her students to their true path through steady cultivation of positive energy. Always moving deeper toward self realization and unity of mind, body and space.

SHANNON WALKER

Board Member & Instructor

Shannon’s classes are a potent mix of yogic philosophy, movement, and curiosity. She sees yoga as a transformative process allowing us to return to our true selves again and again. Her roots are in a strong and playful Vinyasa but she has lots of love for Yin, Restorative, Therapeutics, and Somatic movement.

She is inspired to teach from a place of moving with fine awareness, in hopes to reconnect her students both body and soul.

Shannon received her first 200 level certification through Patti Doyle, of Thames Street Yoga in 2011. She has studied extensively with her teacher Raghunath since 2011 and was granted an honorary 300 hour certification after studying with him in India.

Of recent, she completed a 300 level certification with her friend and teacher Theresa Murphy in the Prajna lineage of Tias Little.

Always a student, Shannon continues her study with her root teachers, Theresa and Raghunath, as well as Carrie Owerko, Patricia Walden, and Tias Little when she can.

Through prenatal yoga I will help you connect with the divine wisdom that lies deep within your body, I will assist you in nurturing, honoring, and nourishing your body, mind and soul throughout your pregnancy.

It is my innate nature to create a peaceful, receptive, safe and sacred environment for this to take place. From gentle movements, massage and visualization to strengthening muscles and your mind to prepare for birth, we will work and flow together, honoring the sacred cycles you are experiencing along the way.

I will help you connect with your body on a deep level, to trust in the miracle of growing and birthing a baby. We will relax and calm your mind to let your body be the guide and work it’s divine magic.” Ashley is a Licensed Massage Therapist practicing in Newport for the past 5 years. She is certified in Prenatal and Yin Yoga and is a Birth Doula in training.

Ashley offers pregnancy packages based on how closely women want to work one on one throughout their pregnancy, offering prenatal yoga, prenatal massage, sacred ceremony, aromatherapy and birth doula services, serving Rhode Island

WILKI

Having grown up in Southern Rhode Island, Elyse was raised with the outdoors being her playground, classroom, and place of peace and serenity.

With discovering Ayurveda in 2010, she now takes that deep appreciation of Nature and applies the wisdom of Ayurveda to bring balance to her mind, body, and health.

Elyse truly believes that ‘It takes a village’ to raise a family and it is her passion to fully support the family unit as a whole and as unique individuals.

Elyse is certified as a 600hr Ayurvedic Health Counselor, two 200hr RYT, and is certified in Prenatal and Postnatal yoga, and is studying to be an Ayurvedic Doula.

HUGHES

In my 20 years of study, yoga has stretched and quieted my body mind and spirit. Yoga has expanded my horizons and brought a more centered awareness, freedom and flexibility to my life.

In class, I invite an expansion of awareness around body mind and breath or spirit, that can be taken off the mat and into our lives.

I believe yoga should be accessible to all. Ultimately, the practice is a personal journey of self study, that we are fortunate to be able to share.

I received my 200 hour certification from Frog Pond Yoga Centre in Princeton, MA in 2014 and have been teaching since. I continue to study and explore the art and science of yoga with an open heart and mind.

SUSAN BOSLEY

Prior to moving to Newport recently, Susan lived in Toronto, Canada where she was the founder and instructor of SkinnyLegs. www.skinnylegs.ca  was created after researching alternative methods to traditional exercise for body types that had grown bulky from using the larger muscle groups with repetitive movement.SkinnyLegs wakes up the smaller secondary muscles and pulls the muscle back to the bone, creating a longer, leaner, stronger yet feminine version of yourself and works the entire body to sculpt long and lean arms and legs.


Susan is a certified 200 hr YogaFit instructor working towards 300 hr, including INDO Yoga Board, SUPYoga/SUPFitness certified teacher through Paddle into Fitness, World Paddle Association, and Yoga Alliance, CanFit Pro certified personal trainer, former licensee for two Booty Camp Fitness locations, former owner of GISH (www.gishskirts.com ) women’s clothing and most recently received her Reiki I and II certification, working towards Reiki master.


She is beyond grateful for how yoga has become such a positive force in her being and mindfulness and the realization of “that what you need finds you” so that you may give the same to others.
